Our Chapter History

The Chi Iota Chapter was originally chartered at the University of Illinois on August 6, 1897, as Phi Gamma Delta’s 73rd Chapter. The Chi Iota Chapter flourished at Illinois and had initiated many successful brothers during its 100-year tenure on campus. Sadly, a number of poor choices and declining membership forced the Chapter to close in 1998.

Throughout this difficult time, it remained clear that Chi Iota would only lay dormant for a short time. The House Corporation remained intact and acted as stewards of the original chapter funds. In 2005, the Archons approved the re-colonization of Chi Iota. The effort was lead by Director of Chapter Services J.B. Goll (Nebraska 2001) and then Field Secretary Kurt Niebuhr (Kansas 2003); together they were able to recruit an excellent founding class of 16 men.

The colony immediately began to build its brotherhood and work to establish itself as a force on campus. The men worked to grow the colony and became involved in many service and philanthropy projects. The colony became active in campus organizations from Orange Krush, the basketball student cheering section, to numerous honorary societies. Throughout its two-year existence, the colony remained well above the all-men’s and all-fraternity grade point averages.

On April 28, 2007, the Fraternity welcomed the Chi Iota Chapter back into its ranks. The charter was presented in front of nearly 200 graduate brothers, fraternity staff, and friends at the Illini Union in Urbana, Illinois. On this day 42 men were pledged and 35 were initiated to the Chi Iota Chapter. After two years of hard work and persistence, the brothers were rewarded with an event many of the brothers now refer to as the hallmark of their fraternal experience.

In August of 2007, 26 brothers moved into their new chapter house located at 902 S. Second St. in Champaign, where they continue to grow in numbers, create lasting memories and support each other as brothers. Today the Chapter proudly consists of 93 initiated and pledge brothers. The brothers continue to strive to improve their chapter and are working to ensure that the white star will always shine brightly at Illinois.
